Important questions and information about Alaxo Nasal Stents and their use

How are the nasal stents used?

The nasal stents are inserted and removed by the user for repeated use. The application is demonstrated in the video:

Application video - german

Application video - english

In general, the introduction tube should be held loosely between the fingers so that it can - where necessary - find its own free path in the nasal passage, e.g. rotate slightly.

The middle nasal passage is reached by guiding the black end of the introduction tube towards the cheekbone. The introduction tube must never be guided upwards towards the eyes (corresponding to the shape of the outer nose), as this is painful due to the narrowness in the upper nasal area and the stent does not belong there.

Further information and instructions for use can be found in the instructions for use (available for download on the regional shop pages).

How do the nasal stents work?

There is initially a short-term effect of improved nasal breathing within the first few days and weeks. However, the complete optimization of nasal breathing is a process that takes many months, comparable to braces. A permanent widening of the nasal passage develops as a result of the mechanical splinting with the nasal stents.

What are typical initial reactions when inserting nasal stents?

An initial increase in mucus production in the nose, an urge to wet and a few tears as well as a foreign body sensation are normal. These usually disappear within a few days as you become accustomed to them.

How do you get used to the nasal stents?

The use of nasal stents requires a familiarization phase similar to that of contact lenses. After the familiarization phase, use becomes part of your daily routine (similar to contact lenses).

If it is initially uncomfortable when the stent unfolds, you can train with just the insertion tube until it works easily and well.

How long does the adaptation phase take?
Depending on the individual nasal anatomy, this phase lasts approximately one to several weeks. If there is a strong foreign body irritation and/or constrictions that make inserting and wearing the stent more uncomfortable, it is recommended that the stents are initially only inserted for hours during the day. The wearing time should be gradually increased until a routine feeling develops.
What is the difference between the AlaxoLito Plus and Xtreme Nasal Stents?
Both nasal stents have the same dimensions, but the mesh of the AlaxoLito Xtreme nasal stent has a slightly higher deployment force. Visually, the two stents are indistinguishable for the layman and the different deployment force can hardly be felt with the fingers. In the nose, on the other hand, this slightly higher deployment force has a demonstrable effect (clinically verified) in that a greater expansion develops. It can also lead to an initially higher foreign body irritation in the nose than the AlaxoLito Plus nasal stent
Do some people experience particular difficulties when inserting nasal stents?

If there are critical constrictions, such as a "hump" (septal spur) on the nasal septum, it may be that the two 60 mm long nasal stents are more difficult or impossible to insert. In this case, the 35 mm long AlaxoLito nasal stent should be used first. Alaxo is aware of several cases (one clinically documented in a scientific publication) where initially only the 35 mm long stent could be inserted. After a few weeks or months of wear, the nasal passage at the critical narrowing point was widened to such an extent that the 60 mm long stent could then be inserted without any problems. In the published case, the septal spur was reduced by the stent over a longer period of time and an optimal diameter of the nasal passage was achieved.

In such cases, a two-stage procedure with the two stent lengths is therefore recommended.

With a curved nasal septum, it is particularly important not to hold the insertion tube firmly between the fingers, but to allow it to find its way freely through the nasal passage by only advancing and allowing the tube to rotate when necessary.

In other cases, it can be helpful to turn the hose slightly in order to get past a critical point.

Are there any particular difficulties when inserting the Alaxo Hybrid Stent?
When using the Alaxo Hybrid Stent, some people may experience increased sensitivity in the throat, which makes insertion of the stent more difficult. In this case, it is advisable to first practice with the insertion tube until it can be inserted easily. The stent should then be inserted, starting - if necessary - with short wearing times, which are gradually extended until full tolerance is achieved.

Experience has shown that wearing the Alaxo Hybrid Stent leads to full tolerance within a few nights. Of course, as always in life, there are exceptions.

How long can the nasal stents be inserted at a time?
The nasal stents can be worn for up to 18 hours at a time. They must then be removed and cleaned. In most cases, a wearing time of up to approx. 10-12 hours is recommended.

In principle, the nasal stents do not have to be worn 24 hours a day to achieve usage success. Regular use is much more important. Using them only once in a while is not enough to achieve efficient optimization of the nasal passage.

Can the nasal stents slip in the nose and be swallowed?
Due to their design with the ball-shaped front part of the nasal stents, they are securely positioned when used correctly in accordance with the instructions for use. The ball is positioned in the area of the outer nose and must be positioned there in order to support the nasal alar. Otherwise the nasal stent cannot function properly. This applies to all AlaxoLito products and in the same way to the Alaxo Hybrid Stent.

The ball-shaped anterior part of the nasal stents must never be pushed deeper into the nose. This would be improper use and would impair the function and safety of the medical device.

How do I remove the nasal stents?
The nasal stent is carefully pulled out of the nose at the "clip" in which the wires are combined.
What do I do if the nasal stents "stick"?
If the nasal stent "sticks" in the nose, this is because nasal mucus has dried on the stent and the mucosa. In this case, please do not pull firmly on the stent, but first rinse water into the nose or breathe in moist air intensively. Then wait until the nasal mucosa has moistened well so that the nasal mucus comes off again. Only pull out the stent when it is easy to remove.
How are the nasal stents cleaned?
The stents are cleaned under running drinking water using the cleaning tube as described in detail in the instructions for use. First, carefully rinse off most of the nasal mucus from the stent with your fingers under running water. The stent is then carefully pushed onto the insertion tube and the remaining mucus is removed from the stent with the fingers. The stent is then carefully pushed off the cleaning tube and left to dry.
Does the effect of the nasal stents wear off over time?
No. The stent retains its original opening force over the maximum allowed period of use of 18 months due to its design and material.

If the stent in the nose feels softer after a few months of use, this is because the nasal passage has widened, i.e. the stent has done its job. In addition, getting used to the stent in the nose means that you (almost) no longer feel it.

When do I need to buy a new nasal stent set?
A nasal stent set has a maximum allowed period of use of 18 months, calculated on the basis of inserting the stents once a day. If the stents are inserted more frequently or just pulled into the insertion tube, the durability is shortened as the nitinol wires at the open end of the stent are compressed very tightly. This places a very high load on the material, which leads to material fatigue and possible wire breakage after the allowed period of use.

If the nasal stents are handled carefully and properly, they can be used for 18 months. After this period, a new set must be inserted. This period of use can be significantly reduced if the stents are not handled properly.

If a wire breaks, the nasal stents must no longer be used and a new set must be purchased

Can you blow your nose with nasal stents in place?
Yes.

It can happen that the "clip" of the stent, in which the wires are combined, is grabbed with the handkerchief and the stent is inadvertently pulled out of the nose.

Do the nasal stents eliminate my snoring?

Optimized nasal breathing can reduce or completely eliminate snoring if its cause lies in the nasal passage. This is individual for each user. In most cases, at least a relevant improvement should be achieved.

Can I use the nasal stents during the day or only at night?

Yes, the nasal stents can be used during the day without any problems, e.g. also during sport.

Does it make sense to insert a stent on one side of the nose only?

No. This is only considered useful if on one side of the nose it is not possible to insert even the short AlaxoLito Nasal Stent. It always makes sense to insert a nasal stent on both sides of the nose so that nasal breathing is optimized on both sides. A nasal stent also improves nasal breathing in the "better" nasal passage.

Can the nasal stents be used for colds or allergies?

Yes, the purpose of nasal stents is to improve the air flow in the nose. This is achieved, among others, by the stent forming an air channel between the turbinates. This air channel helps with nasal congestion caused by colds or allergies, as the nasal mucus is deposited on the surface of the stent mesh and does not block the nasal passage.

Is it enough to use the nasal stents every now and then to achieve optimal results?

No. Optimization of nasal breathing is only achieved if the nasal stents are used regularly. Long-term use is required for optimal results, as this is like "nasal orthopaedics", which - like orthodontics - takes time to fully achieve the optimization goals.
